A truly inspirational story of courage and determination in the best-selling tradition of Lance Armstrong's “It's Not About the Bike”. Swimming champ Petria Thomas opens her heart about overcoming debilitating physical setbacks as well as severe depression in her quest for Olympic gold.

Petria Thomas won the hearts of millions around the world with her triple-gold-medal-winning triumph at the Athens Olympic Games in 2004. But there's more to the Queen of Butterfly than meets the eye, and here for the first time is the full and authorised story of Australian swimming's golden girl: her battle against severe depression, her cries for help that almost ended her life, and the extraordinary determination that overcame these physical and emotional pressures to reach the pinnacle of her career.

TEAMBUILDING SOLUTIONS

"Dare to be Different"

Mark McKeon, Director of Mischief, Motivation, Attitude Pty Ltd (MMA) shares with us a program developed for a corporate client with some serious concerns:

In early May a company contacted us at Mischief, Motivation, Attitude Pty Ltd with a dilemma, they had some concerns that they needed to address at their upcoming conference.

Their concerns were:

  • A disjointed team
  • Poor communication
  • High stress levels
  • Poor time management
  • Need for a friendly work environment

Taking into account their concerns we developed and pitched a full day program that would address the concerns above and we challenge them to ‘Dare to be Different’

Firstly we utilised our ‘How Teams Function’ session which concentrates on what it takes to be a ‘High Performing Team’. The 3 keys to high performing teams are:

  • Good Clear Communication
  • Clearly Defined Goals
  • Consistency

Secondly we conducted our ‘Creating Time’ workshop, which is a personal time audit. Where does your time go? It highlights the difference between managing time and creating time. The 4 ways to create time are:

  1. Outsource/Delegate
  2. 6 P’s , Prior Planning & Preparation Prevents Poor Performance
  3. Sleep efficiently
  4. Say No

We truly believe that learning should be fun so we interject fun experiential activities that illustrate the key learnings from each session; these activities promote 100% participation & 100% fun.

After our session we received this feedback:

Excellent!!

Derek was engaging, to the point, addressed our concerns and kept the staff involved. He was excellent, patient and appropriate with the ‘mouthy’ group but managed to engage and stimulate everyone with the specific areas of importance. Fabulous presenter with great energy .

After follow up communication with the company they are now working in a low stress level and friendly environment, no longer do they need to work late, they have clear communication and the team cohesion is better than ever.

A true success.

FEATURED SPEAKER - Madeleine West

At 16 Madeleine West became a street kid after years in an abusive family and then became a ward of the state. With enormous determination she was able to put herself through school achieving high enough marks to be accepted into Melbourne University Law.

After her performing career had taken off with her leading role in Neighbours, Madeleine was tragically hit by a bus which not only almost killed her but also nearly ended her performing career, something she had worked for so hard and so long to achieve.

It is amazing how many lifetimes can be crammed into just 24 years, but Madeleine West has experienced more in her time than many would even dare imagine. Despite personal tragedy and seemingly impossible odds, Madeleine is fulfilling her ambitions, and is living proof that regardless of the obstacles you face, by setting goals and having faith in yourself, anything is possible.

As Madeleine says, “If you dare to dream, no matter who you are, nothing can stop you...not even a bus!”
